The Magus Circle Leviathan Guide: Extraction Materials and Region Unlocks

How the Leviathan ends a run in The Magus Circle: kill it, draw the extraction sigil, survive the channel, and bank its materials to unlock mages and planets.

FAQ

How do you exit a run after defeating the Leviathan in The Magus Circle?
Draw the extraction sigil where the Leviathan died and survive while it channels — extra enemies spawn during the channel. When it completes you return to the mansion hub with the Leviathan materials. Misfires were common at launch; the 1.0.2 hotfix improved the sigil's ease of cast.
What are Leviathan materials used for?
The map select screen says to "extract with the Leviathan material on each character" — collection is tracked per mage across six slots, and materials gate progress toward the planet and mage unlocks.
What is the Supernova upgrade?
A Leviathan-tier upgrade players describe as an overpowered split beam that fires away from your character. One player reports that with enough spell size it kept enemies from ever reaching them — and that it stopped the Riptide spell's launch-week misbehavior.
Why does my extraction sigil do nothing?
At launch the extraction drawing was sometimes misread — one player's extract was repeatedly read as Rum's attack spell. Draw it slowly and large, away from the horde, and make sure you have the 1.0.2 hotfix, which targeted exactly this.

What is the Leviathan in The Magus Circle?

The Leviathan is the boss that ends a run the right way. Rather than dying or quitting, you hunt the Leviathan, kill it, and extract — the game’s term for leaving a run alive with its rewards. The map select screen makes the long game explicit: “Extract with the Leviathan material on each character,” tracked across six collection slots, one per mage. That one sentence ties the whole loop together: runs end in extraction, extraction banks materials, materials unlock the rest of the circle.

It is also, per the official store description, the face of the game’s “colossal bosses” — the launch build spreads boss encounters across four planets.

How do you extract after defeating the Leviathan?

Player reports from launch week agree on the same sequence:

  1. Kill the Leviathan. Standard survivors-like combat — kite, draw, cast. One launch-week streamer’s run shows the fight escalating well beyond the horde’s normal pressure.
  2. Draw the extraction sigil at the exit point where the Leviathan fell.
  3. Survive the channel. As one player put it: “you’re supposed to survive while the sigil attracts more mobs than usual.” The channel is the real boss enrage — plan your positioning before you start drawing.
  4. Return to the mansion. A completed channel sends you back to the hub with the materials banked.

Why does the extraction sigil fail to work?

Extraction misfires were the single most reported boss-related problem in launch week, and the threads tell a consistent story:

  • Misreads. The extraction shape was sometimes read as a combat spell — one player’s extract “was being misread as Rum’s attack spell,” which made extraction impossible until the mobs ended the run for them.
  • Nothing happens on a correct draw. “I killed the Leviathan, drew the portal sigil and then… nothing?” is how one player described it; another found the channel sometimes simply completed without the reward.
  • It got patched. The 1.0.2 hotfix “fixed extraction sigil descriptions and ease of cast” and “added an additional tutorial for leaving the extraction circle” — the studio clearly knows this step was the game’s rough edge.

If extraction fails for you post-1.0.2, the drawing guide covers the recognition habits that help: bigger shape, slower stroke, draw away from the horde so stray lines don’t blur.

What do Leviathan materials actually unlock?

Two things, one confirmed and one in progress:

  1. Per-character progression. The collection tracker on the map screen is per mage — every one of the six characters has to extract personally, which is what the “Everybody is Here” achievement (0.1% at launch) is gating.
  2. Leviathan upgrades. Killing Leviathans feeds upgrade options like Supernova — described by players as a split beam that fires away from your character, strong enough that one player combined it with spell size to make themselves effectively untouchable.

The exact material counts per planet are still being documented. A fresh save shows three planets visible (Mirna, Yawm, Elysia) and the fourth locked; we will update this page with precise requirements once they are captured in-game.

How do you prepare for a Leviathan run?

Three practical notes from everything above:

  • Bring your A-game heal plan. The channel spawns extra mobs right after the fight — check the beginner guide for the confirmed healing options before you commit.
  • Practice the extraction shape before you need it. It is stricter than most combat spells, and fumbling it at minute twelve with a horde incoming is the classic launch-week death.
  • Track which mage you are farming. Materials do not carry across characters, so rotate early — the mages roster explains why every mage needs their own extraction, and the boss roster tracks what else is out there guarding the planets.
