FAQ

Is The Magus Circle hard for beginners?
The first runs are intentionally short while you learn sigil shapes. Turn on the accessibility options (slow or freeze time while drawing, or button-press mode) and stay near slow early enemies — casting while moving is a skill that clicks within a few runs.
Does The Magus Circle support drawing tablets?
Yes. The developer says most drawing tablets work, though Wacom tablets may require disabling Microsoft Ink so the game can register the pen. Touchscreens and controllers are supported too.
How do you heal in The Magus Circle?
Three main ways: complete the heart shape around special trees on the first map, pick up health potions on later maps, and take the circle level-up ability that restores HP after a number of kills. Some mages also have character-specific healing.
Is The Magus Circle coming to mobile?
Yes. The launch FAQ confirms Google Play and iOS ports are planned for the end of 2026. A Switch port has no active plans yet but may be considered if the game does well on Steam.

What kind of game is The Magus Circle?

The Magus Circle is a single-player, vampire-survivors-style rogue-lite where you cast spells by drawing sigils with your mouse, pen, or fingertip. Hordes close in, you sketch arcane shapes to answer them, and every run feeds permanent progress back to a hub — the Magus Mansion. It launched on Steam on September 24, 2026, from a small studio called By Witchlight, and the launch build lists 20 unique spells, around 600 possible upgrades, four planets, and six playable mages.

If you have never played a survivors-like, the pitch is simple: you do not aim every attack. Your spells fire on cooldowns and repeat themselves; your real jobs are positioning, drawing new sigils at the right moment, and choosing upgrades that stack into a build. The twist here is the drawing itself — every spell is a shape you physically sketch, and the game grades your penmanship.

How does your first run go, step by step?

You start in the Magus Mansion, pick a mage, and choose a planet from the map select screen. The first planet, Mirna, is described in-game as a world that “has nearly fallen to The Tide. There is no one left to save, only destruction to be wrought.” A timer counts up at the top of the screen while XP motes drift toward you, kills tally in the corner, and each level-up pauses the run to offer upgrade cards.

A practical first-run checklist:

  1. Open Settings before anything else. The game offers accessibility options that slow or freeze time while you draw, plus a button-press mode. New players should enable at least the time-slow option — it exists for exactly this moment.
  2. Learn your starting sigil first. Every mage begins with one spell; practice its shape on harmless early enemies before the horde thickens.
  3. Keep moving. Casting does not root you — you can walk while you sketch. Kiting enemies in a wide loop while drawing is the core rhythm of the game.
  4. Grab XP motes greedily but safely. The HUD shows an XP bonus multiplier; higher multipliers appear as you chain pickups without taking damage.
  5. End the run on purpose. Either die and take the knowledge home, or go for extraction (more on that below).

How does draw-to-cast spellcasting actually work?

Hold the cast input and sketch the sigil shown on your spell bar; release to fire. The game is explicitly forgiving about artistry — even crudely drawn sigils hold magic, and the launch announcement promises that spell recognition will keep being tuned with player feedback. Two findings from the community are worth knowing before your first run:

  • A bad draw gets you zapped. Players report a lightning strike penalty for sigils the game cannot read. If you keep getting struck mid-draw, slow down, enlarge the shape, or switch to button-press mode while you learn.
  • Recognition strictness varies per spell. One player found Exsanguinate reliably triggered by a single horizontal line, while other shapes are stricter. If a shape keeps failing, check the spellbook entry for the canonical form.

Mid-combat HUD showing five equipped sigil slots on the right edge

The five boxes on the right edge of the screen are your equipped spells, each showing the sigil you draw and its cooldown. Mana is the shared fuel: bigger spells cost more, and mana regen can be upgraded (the Day 1 patch even distinguishes normal regen from overcharge). For shape-by-shape advice, see our guide to drawing sigils, and for what each shape does, the verified spell list is growing as we test.

How do you heal during a run?

Healing is sparse by design, which is why the community’s most upvoted question in launch week was literally “is there some way to heal?”. Three answers have been confirmed by players so far:

Method Where How it works
Heart trees First planet (Mirna) Complete the heart-shaped pattern around the tree to restore HP
Health potions Later planets Ground pickups that restore health
Level-up ability Any run A circle upgrade heals 1 HP after a set number of kills

Some mages also carry character-specific healing in their kit. Until you have one of those, treat HP as a resource you spend to learn — short runs that end in a death screen are normal for the first evening.

What happens when you die — or when you extract?

Death ends the run with a short scene (one player screenshot shows Milk flatly announcing “…I died.”), and you wake back at the mansion with your run’s earnings. Extraction is the intentional exit: defeat the Leviathan and draw the extraction sigil to channel your way out — while it channels, extra enemies spawn to punish you, and a clean channel returns you to the hub. The map select screen states the long-term goal plainly: “Extract with the Leviathan material on each character.” Our Leviathan and extraction guide walks through the full unlock chain, and the boss roster page tracks every giant encounter confirmed so far.

What should you unlock first at the Magus Mansion?

The mansion is the progression engine: potions get brewed at cauldrons, tarot cards modify runs, familiars follow you out, and wagers let you gamble your winnings. The rarest launch achievements point at the endgame of each system — “The Hand We Are Dealt” for unlocking all tarot, “Everybody is Here” for all playable characters, “Holistic Caster” for casting every spell. Easiest first wins: the most common achievement is unlocking Curio’s shop (86.7% of players have it), and nearly 40% have caught a fish, which tells you how quickly the fishing minigame shows up. Our Magus Mansion guide maps the whole hub, and the mages roster helps you pick who to unlock first.

Where does The Magus Circle go from here?

The launch FAQ commits to Google Play and iOS ports by the end of 2026, with a Switch version only “if we do well enough on Steam.” The Day 1 and 1.0.2 hotfixes have already squashed the worst launch bugs (mana-mote lag, extraction sigil clarity, an Anchan ability softlock), so if you tried the demo during Next Fest in February 2026 and bounced off the jank, the 1.0 build is a meaningfully better entry point.
